South-east Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services has found online resources that may be of interest to the Deaf and hard of hearing and their family and friends. Links are provided with brief descriptions under the five following headings:


Organizations

Canadian Association of the Deaf

The Canadian Association of the Deaf is the national consumer organization of the Deaf people of Canada. It combines the purposes of a research and information centre, an advisory council, a representative body, a self-help society, and a community action organization.

The oldest national disabled persons group in this country, it was founded in 1940 by the three regional associations of the Deaf: the Western Canada Association, the Ontario Association, and the Eastern Canada Association, with the support of the Montreal Association of the Deaf (then the major organization of the Deaf in Quebec).

Canadian Hearing Society

The Canadian Hearing Society provides services that enhance the independence of deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people, and that encourage prevention of hearing loss.

The Canadian Hearing Society was incorporated in 1940 to impartially serve and support deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people, parents of deaf and hard of hearing children and to educate the hearing public.

Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf

The Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf was developed to allow Deaf people to work together for Deaf people. The primary goals are to ensure that ASL and LSQ continue to flourish as languages and to promote Deaf culture.

Disabled People's Association - Singapore

The association has included online resources for the Deaf and hard of hearing. On this page, some areas of interest include:

  • newsgroups and mailing lists for the Deaf and hard of hearing.

Hearing Health Magazine

A quarterly publication of the Deafness Research Foundation Hearing Health has evolved into a go-to site for people seeking information about ear and hearing disorders and deafness.


Support programs and interest

Hearing Exchange

HearingExchange.com provides ideas and information on hearing loss. Users can post their resume and search jobs, chat on the community message board and sign up for the Hearing Exchange e-mail newsletter.

DeafChat.com

This multi-room chatroom is open 24 hours a day, and is monitored to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. It's free to everyone. Deaf and hearing visitors from all nations (and of all opinions) are welcome to log on and chat , join in discussions and debates.

Deaf Directory

You can register your e-mail address (and website if you have one) on the Deaf Directory. This is a central resource helping you link up with people around the world who are Deaf or hard of hearing.

Deaf Zone

This is an online portal, that is a springboard to other Web sites. Deaf Zone displays varied online resources for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

SHHH

SHHH (or Self Help for Hard of Hearing People) opens the world of communication to people with hearing loss by providing information, education, support and advocacy.


Sign language

ASL SLanT

ASL SLanT (Sign Language Teacher) is a free downloadable program for learning and practicing fingerspelling. This program displays banner advertising.

HandSpeak

HandSpeak is a resource for the Deaf and hard of hearing. It explores imagery language (including ASL), communication, cultures, arts and visual creativity.


Other resources

The Deaf Resource Library (in ASL: D-R-L or DEAF-LIBRARY) is an online collection of reference material and links intended to educate and inform people about Deaf cultures.

DeafToday

News is collected and posted on DeafToday to make HOH and the Deaf community aware of what's going on. It's free to post on DeafToday.
